Legal Office Assistant

The Legal Office Assistant performs a variety of secretarial and clerical work of a legal nature in assisting attorneys in the preparation of legal documents and the filing and organization of court information. Responsibilities also include answering phones, greeting, and assisting clients, entering data into a computer system, preparing and sending correspondence and preparing and collecting information to assist attorneys.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and manage a caseload of predominantly misdemeanor cases, low-level felonies, juvenile violation cases, and juvenile abuse and neglect cases. Present cases for legal proceedings. Prepare, draft, and file legal documents and correspondence.
  • Answer and direct phone calls. Greet and assist clients and other walk-in traffic.
  • Type, prepare and send papers, reports, forms, and correspondence of a legal nature, including letters, orders, complaints, warrants, summonses, motions, subpoenas, and briefs. Take and transcribe notes and dictation. File and route legal documents.
  • Enter information into the computer. Make copies. Request reports and records. Create, prepare, and maintain files. Gather, sort, organize and prepare files and information for attorney handling. Distribute, log and track files, reports, and case information. Maintain records and statistics.
  • Prepare documents for the court. Assist attorneys with document preparation and filing of court information.
  • Process incoming and outgoing mail. Prepare purchase orders and county vouchers for processing and payment. Maintain inventory. Order office supplies, coordinate repairs of office equipment. Coordinate travel for staff and witnesses.

Applicants Should Have:

High school diploma or GED and two years of general secretarial work. Comparable combination of education and experience may be considered.

Highly Qualified Candidates Will Have:

Three or more years of secretarial experience. Strong technical skills in a variety of word and data processing programs. Experience in a legal environment. Knowledge of legal terminology.

 

Compensation

$20.95 - $23.11 per hour
